Public Order bill to be tabled again - Information ministry assures Information Minister, Mohamed
The Ministry of Information and Communications has assured that the bill entitled: “The Public Order (Amendment) Act, 2019’ will be tabled again before parliament following their recess.
A release from the ministry stated that the amendment act will be tabled together with the Independent Media Commission bill, 2020.
When the bill was first tabled in parliament in November 2019, there were concerns from lawmakers with regards safeguards on the IMC act for the protection of people’s reputation.
On the part of the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ), it was self-regulation, which means the reconstitution and strengthening of the association’s Disciplinary Committee.
On Tuesday June 2, 2020, the bill was withdrawn by parliament because it has over stayed it time in the house without any action being taken.
The ministry stated in the press release that they were only aware about the withdrawal through the media by the Leader of Government Business and Chair of the Parliamentary Committee on Appointment and Public Service during a radio interview.
It reiterated the government commitment to repealing part V of the Public Order Act of 1965 as reaffirmed by President Julius Maada Bio during the state opening of parliament on May 28, 2020.
