Trade Minister assures stakeholders in Kambia
The Minister of Trade and Industry, Dr.Edward Hinga Sandy has assured stakeholders in Kambia district of government's support in the promotion of trade and security.
During a familiarization visit, the minister stressed the importance of the stakeholders in the district as they are essential in the promotion of trade in that part of the country.
He encouraged stakeholders to work together in the interest of the country adding, “I therefore call on you all to accept the Integrated Trade Services Company (ITS) that is now in charge of inspection, scanning and evaluation of goods coming into the country, following the cancellation of contract with Sierra Inspection Company.”
Representing the National Revenue Authority (NRA), Kpana Conteh explained that the scanning and inspection of goods is currently being done manually.
“The Ministries of Finance and Trade and Industry are key partners in our operations. We have been challenged over the years because of the non-usage of the scanner. We are scanning and inspecting goods manually and that is time consuming,” he said.
Mr. Conteh expressed hope of having the donated scanner operational soon as Sierra Leone is part of the World Customs Organization and the scanner is very important in their operations.
Chief Executive Officer of the Integrated Trade Services (ITS), Albert Gulama expressed his company's willingness to serve the country by providing the required valuation and inspection services for Customs, giving indicative of cost in terms of duties and taxes. He called on all present to be supportive of each other as the company’s look forward to meeting them as part of the agreement signed with the government.
District Security Coordinator of the Office of National Security (ONS), Mustapha Bonnie, commended the Minister of Trade for engaging stakeholders in the district with regards the promotion of trade.
He described the engagement as timely, and that the act of formerly introducing the Integrated Trade Services Company (ITS) to them is laudable.
